Brush Lettering: Practice Makes Perfect

Hi everyone!

I’ve been so busy these last few weeks that I haven’t had any time to blog! 🙁

Thankfully, my schedule is becoming way less hectic, so I will have a lot more time to blog now!

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ve seen my brush lettering hobby evolve. Today, I’ve decided to share my little, brush lettering journey from beginning to now!

IMG_1799It all started when I discovered some calligraphers on Instagram!  My favorites are amandaarneill and piecescalligraphy.

I started watching their short brush lettering videos over and over again!  My friends laughed at me for my little obsession but whatever!  Their videos are fascinating to watch!

I decided I was going to be a fantastic calligrapher and went on Amazon and bought some Tombow Dual Brush Pens!  The markers took so long to come in, I thought I was going to die! 🙂

IMG_4593Once I got my markers, I was shocked with how difficult lettering was.  The videos I watched made it look so easy!

Following my disappointment, I went online and looked up some lettering tips.  A lot of people said to practice writing the same letter over and over again, so that’s what I did!

I also messaged Amanda (amandaarneill) and asked for her advice.  She recommended Modern Calligraphy by Molly Suber Thorpe.  I found the book to be pretty helpful!

IMG_1831This is one of the first lettering photos I posted.  I thought it was pretty cute, but I knew I could do better!

IMG_1861This is another one of my early lettering posts.  I really struggled with making my upstrokes thinner than my downstrokes.

IMG_1911It was quite disheartening when I realized that I would have to really work at my lettering.  I have a lot of confidence in my crafting abilities and just assumed that I would immediately be fantastic at lettering.  I got a bit of a wake-up call!

IMG_2611Fortunately, things do get easier and I did get better with practice!

IMG_3277Think happy, Be happy and you will make progress! 🙂

IMG_4036This is my most recent lettering post, and you can really see my stroke variation! YAY!!! I can’t tell you how happy that makes me!

IMG_4595I’ve taken to writing myself little reminders with my brush pens, so I can get a little extra practice during my everyday!

IMG_2442Like most crafts, I jumped into this one with both feet!

Within several weeks I had bought over 40 markers!

I don’t suggest everyone dive in and spend tons of money on a project you’re not sure you can actually do, but it seems to have worked out for me! 🙂

IMG_4590Here’s another recent one I’m gong to post on Instagram later today!

This little project really is proof that practice makes perfect!

Have you struggled with any crafts recently?!

Are you a fan of hand lettering?!
