Crochet Hair Bow: Free Pattern

Crochet Hair Bow Featured Image - Pink Bows & Twinkle Toes

Raise your hand if you love bows! Are you raising your hand? I sure am! And today, I’m going to show you a quick & easy (& super cute) pattern for a crochet hair bow. All you need is a bit of scrap yarn and a few supplies to get started!

Three finished crochet hair bows next to three balls of yarn

Hair Bow Details

You can use whatever yarn you would like for this project. I’ll be using sport-weight yarn, but you can use anything you have on hand! The weight of your yarn will affect the final size of your bow, though, so keep that in mind. Fingering weight will result in a smaller, daintier bow, while bulky yarn will produce a chunkier bow!

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in U.S. terminology
  • Stitch count is indicated in parentheses at the end of each row
  • The chain at the start of the round does not count as a stitch
  • Gauge: Not important, but for reference, my finished bows measure 4″ wide x 3″ tall
  • The first row is worked into the “back bumps” of the starting chain. If you don’t like the “back bump” method, feel free to work into the back loop of the chain instead.

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • Ch: chain
  • HDC: half double crochet
  • BLO: back loop only

Crochet Hair Bow Pattern

Ch. 70

Row 1: Skip the first Ch and HDC in the back bump of the 2nd Ch. HDC in each back bump all the way across, Ch. 1 and turn. (69)

Row 2: HDC in BLO until one stitch is left. In the last stitch, HDC through both loops. Ch. 1 and turn. (69)

Row 3: Repeat row 2. (69)

Fasten off and weave in your ends. You’ve now crocheted the “ribbon” that we will use to make the bow.

Crochet Hair Bow Assembly: Part 1

1) Place your crochet “ribbon” on a table with the wrong side facing up. Then pick up the right end, create a loop, and cross it over the midpoint of your strip.

2) Pick up the left end, create a loop, and cross it over the midpoint and the tail of the other loop. Do you see the bow taking shape?

3) Take a piece of yarn and lay it across the middle of your bow. Hold the center of your bow in place while wrapping the string around.

To ensure the center is even, I like to wrap several times with the yarn tail in my right hand and then wrap a few more times with the yarn tail in my left hand.

Secure the center of the bow with a knot.

Once the center of your bow is as thick or thin as you desire, flip the bow over and tie the two yarn tails into a knot. Then, for good measure, tie another knot or two. You could also add a dab of glue for extra security.

Once the yarn is knotted and the center of the bow is secure, snip the ends of the yarn tails.

4) Turn your bow back over and admire your handiwork!

Crochet Hair Bow Assembly: Part 2

This next part is very easy! Turn your bow over so the backside is facing you. Then take an alligator clip, open it up, and slip one side through the yarn wrapped around the middle of your bow. And there you have it! A sweet and simple crochet hair bow ready to mix and match with all your outfits!

Adding a barrette to the back of the bow.

If you would prefer to attach a barrette, simply take a scrap piece of yarn and sew the barrette to the back of your hair bow using the pre-drilled holes on the right and left of the metal barrette. When sewing onto your bow, try to thread your needle through the back stitches and avoid threading through the front. Once you’ve sewn a few stitches, fasten off and trim your ends.

Ta Da! Your crochet hair bow is ready to wear!

I love wearing bows in my hair and can’t wait to add these three into my rotation!

I’m also going to be making a few extras as gifts! How cute would these be as little “Mommy + Me” accessories??
