Watercolor Wednesday – The Adventure Begins

Hi everyone!

I’ve been looking for a new craft for a while now and have decided to try out watercolor!

Since I usually post on Wednesdays and watercolor starts with a “W,” I have dubbed this little adventure “Watercolor Wednesday.” I won’t be posting a watercolor article every Wednesday (because I’ll probably forget), but I will be posting several each month!

Get excited! IMG_3920Jo-Ann’s had a ton of 50% off coupons floating around last week, so I decided to go ahead and pick up some watercolor supplies!

They had a big, pretty pack of 24 watercolors that I really wanted to buy, but I was sensible and chose to buy the small (way less exciting) 12 pack.  If I get really good at watercolors, you better believe I will go back and buy the big pack of paints!

I also bought a paint palette (all my other ones are gross and not good for pictures), some paint brushes (I have lots of paint brushes, but I use them all for acrylics), and some watercolor paper. (I really needed this. I don’t have any other watercolor paper lying around!) IMG_3965I began testing my skills with some doodles and brush lettering.

If you follow me on Instagram (which you definitely should), you would know that I took up brush lettering earlier in the summer.  Conveniently enough, those skills transferred over, and I feel somewhat confident in my ability to letter with an actual paint brush! Yay! IMG_3966I really love how my little lemon turned out! Too cute!!

After painting such an adorable lemon, I got confident in my skills and decided to paint a phrase. IMG_3968Now this right here is what happens when you aren’t paying attention to your work!  Such a sad, sad typo!

I was paying more attention to Gilmore Girls than I was my words and ended up making a fatal mistake! 🙁

I actually caught the mistake as soon as I finished the “e” in “dream” but decided to just go ahead and finish it anyway. Next time I’ll pause my Netflix when I’m working on something semi-tedious!

Lesson learned!

I hope you enjoyed this little intro to Watercolor Wednesday!

I’ll be back next week with (hopefully) no typos! Bow signature pink

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Personalized Floral Wreath

Hi everyone!

I have a fun, personalized project to share with you today!

IMG_3775Supplies:

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric (mine is from Hobby Lobby)
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

IMG_3778DMC Floss Colors:

  • 4230 – variegated blue
  • E415 – metallic silver

We’re going to start the project by printing off the letter of your choice is a festive font!  I chose “N” for Natalie, typed it up, and printed it out.

I used the Onyx typeface, which I believe came standard on my computer.

Once you print out your letter, trace it onto your fabric.

IMG_3781We’re going to start by using the satin stitch for the serifed areas.

As I’m sure you’ve figured out, I never do the satin stitch.  Because I never use the satin stitch, I’m not very good at it!  So this project is practice for me!

IMG_3784Use a larger than normal back stitch for the straight lines.

IMG_3786Do the same for the other side of the letter.

IMG_3792Now comes the fun part!

We’re going to satin stitch the entire center portion of the letter.

IMG_3803This is where you really get the see the variations in the thread!

IMG_3806Keep going until you reach the bottom!

I’m actually rather pleased with how my satin stitch looks!  I know its just straight lines, but I’m still impressed with myself! 🙂

IMG_3808To make the edges look cleaner, we’re going to add a few of the large back stitches around the edge of the satin stitch.

IMG_3812Add it to the other side as well.  I also added a stitch across the bottom just to clean it up a bit.

IMG_3867Now we’re going to use our silver thread to stitch a wreath around the outside of the letter.

Use the feather stitch for this portion and alternate the side that the “feather” falls on.

IMG_3870I didn’t realize until after I’d stitched around the entire hoop that I had the wrong number of feathers.  The first and last one ended up being on the same side! Oh no!!

IMG_3875To fix that problem, I went back with the straight stitch and added a second feather.

IMG_3876Much better!

IMG_3881Now we can add some French knot flowers.

I triple wrapped all of these French knots.

IMG_3889So pretty!  I love the color variations!

IMG_3894Once the knots are complete, our project is done!

IMG_3907I had a few setbacks with this project, but I love the way it turned out!  The silver thread really brings out the little silver spots in my fabric!

Happy Crafting!!

IMG_3517Henri Bendel – Signature Stripe Canvas Dopp Kit – Retail Value $28

I absolutely love this makeup bag!  It’s so cute and super functional!

IMG_3520I love that it opens and stays open.  So handy!

It’s also a great size.  Not too big and not too small!

I also love coupons! 🙂

IMG_3503Supergoop! – Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 – Retail Value $28

I received a travel size of this same setting mist in my Allure Beauty Box this month.  I love the spray, so I’m completely okay with the double!  I especially don’t mind that this is the full size!

I just ran out of setting spray, so this mist couldn’t have come at a better time!  The mist is really fine and smells great!

I especially love that this setting mist has SPF in it!  That’s great for my fair skin!

IMG_3512Sorial – Card Case – Retail Value $28

This card case is so cute!  It’ll be perfect to slip into all my small handbags!  I currently wrap my ID and debit card in a hair tie when I go out.  This card case will allow me to eliminate that semi-ghetto practice! 🙂

Another coupon! YAY!!

IMG_3505PopDental – Portable Toothbrush – Retail Value $19.99

This toothbrush is so cute! It’ll be perfect for traveling!  I typically leave my electric toothbrush at home when I go on trips and travel with a manual.  Now I won’t have to!

IMG_3513Yes To – Blueberries Cleansing Facial Wipes – Retail Value $5.99

I’ve tried lots of facial wipes in the last few years. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any that don’t irritate my face.  These ones are no different.  After using them, by face burned a little. 🙁

The packaging is so cute and the scent is so familiar.  I can’t quite place it though!

I’m going to see if any of my friends can use these.

IMG_3509The Good Bean – Fruit & No-Nut Bar – Chocolate Berry – Retail Value $1.99

I was crazy hungry when I got my box from the mail, so right after I took a picture, I devoured this bar!

I think I would’ve preferred the bar if there would’ve been some nuts or something in it.  The bar just tasted too much like cardboard. 🙁

IMG_3524Special Extra – Hallmark – Signature Greeting Cards – Retail Value $4.99, $4.99, and $5.99

You can never have to many greeting cards!  These were a great addition to the box!

IMG_3528Each box came with a different assortment of cards.

I got a wedding card, a birthday card, and a blank card.

My brother is getting married soon, so perhaps he and his wife will get the wedding card! 😉

IMG_3501Aside from the facial wipes and the fruit bar, I’m very pleased with this month’s box!

The total retail value is $127.94!  That’s not too shabby!

Allure Beauty Box Review – July 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Allure review!

IMG_3459You might have noticed that the Allure box changed it’s name.  What used to be Sample Society is now Beauty Box. The Allure subscription box used to be fulfilled by beautybar.com, but now Allure has taken over the fulfillment process and changed a few things.

IMG_3464The mini magazine is still the same.  It features every product included in the box and information about why they picked that specific product.

IMG_3467Box Contents:

  • Bumble and Bumble – Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer
  • Oscar Blandi – Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray
  • Supergoop – Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50
  • Estée Lauder – Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II
  • Estée Lauder – Sumptuous Infinite Daring Length + Volume Mascara
  • Invisibobble – The Traceless Hair Ring

IMG_3475Bumble and Bumble – Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer

I’ve heard great things about Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, so I was super excited when I saw this primer in my box!  I was pretty impressed with the size of this sample!  All of the other Bumble and Bumble samples I’ve received in the past have been the size of those puny perfume samples that people always get for free.

I’ve used the primer several times now, and I like it.  It smells great!

IMG_3472Oscar Blandi – Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray

I’m a big fan of washing my hair, so I never end up using the dry shampoo samples I get in my subscription boxes.  I’ll have to see if one of my friends wants this.

Once again, I’m impressed with the size of this sample!  So nice and big!

IMG_3476Supergoop – Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50

I can’t tell you how excited I was when I saw this setting spray in my box!  I just ran out of the setting spray I usually use, so this couldn’t have come at a better time!

I love how fine this mist is and the fact that it includes SPF!  So handy!!

IMG_3486Estée Lauder – Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II

I’m pretty loyal to my nightly serum, except when I travel!  My nightly serum can be a little bulky to pack, so lately I’ve been traveling with random samples I’ve acquired.  This one will be added to the mix!

I have been testing it out for the last few nights, and I do like the formula!  It’s light and hasn’t made me break out or anything!  That’s always a plus!!

IMG_3478Estée Lauder – Sumptuous Infinite Daring Length + Volume Mascara

I loving trying out different mascara samples!  I’m always on the hunt for the best one!  Unfortunately, this one isn’t it.

I find this mascara to be a little to wet.  After application, quite a bit of mascara transferred onto my eyelid/brow bone area.  Super annoying!

IMG_3485Invisibobble – The Traceless Hair Ring

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty weirded out by this product when I first saw it!  These hair ties look just like the dorky key chains my elementary/middle school gym teachers used to have!

After I got over my initial skepticism, I gave the hair ties a try and really liked them!  They have incredible hold, and leave barely any kink in my hair after being removed!  What a deal!

IMG_3552I’m loving this first month of the Beauty Box!  I hope each month continues to be this good or better!

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Hot Air Balloon

Hi everyone!

I have a pretty, little embroidery tutorial to share with you today! IMG_3343Supplies:

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric (mine is from Joann’s)
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

IMG_3342DMC Floss Color:

  • 4180 – variegated pink

IMG_3347I found this cute hot air balloon motif on Pinterest.  You can find it here!

After printing off the motif, trace it, and hoop your fabric. IMG_3348Start by Back Stitching the balloon.

This project is super easy and is made with only the Back Stitch and a few Straight Stitches. IMG_3350 IMG_3356 IMG_3387 IMG_3391Keep Back Stitching until the balloon is complete. IMG_3394Split your thread into two strands of three.  You’ll be using strands of three for the remainder of this project.

Use one of the strands of three to stitch this zig zaggy portion of the motif. IMG_3398Continue using one of your strands of three to Straight Stitch the ropes that tether the balloon to its basket. IMG_3402Back Stitch the little basket. IMG_3405Add a few straight stitches across to complete the basket and our hot air balloon! IMG_3448I love the way the pink and yellow look together!

So cute!

I’m going to go back in a few days and add some embellishments to the balloon!  There will be a separate tutorial for that! IMG_3437Happy Crafting! Bow signature pink

DIY – How To Paint an Ikat Canvas

Hi everyone!

I have a quick and easy painting tutorial to share with you today! IMG_2913Supplies:

  • Canvas
  • Flat paint brush
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Pearl Acrylic Paint
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Metallic Acrylic Paint

IMG_3119Martha Stewart Crafts Pearl Acrylic Paint

  • Hummingbird
  • Twilight Blue
  • Mother of Pearl

Martha Stewart Crafts Metallic Acrylic Paint

  • Sterling

IMG_2916Start with the blue, pearl paint and evenly place little dots of paint across your canvas.  Be sure to stagger your dots!

I squirted my paint dots right out of the bottle to ensure that the dots were relatively even in size.  I didn’t want one dot to have significantly more or less paint than any of the others. IMG_2918Using your paint brush, make a rough diamond shape where each paint dot is located. IMG_2923Continue making the rough diamonds. IMG_2926 Once all the blue diamonds are completed, go over each of them with a little bit of the white pearl paint.

We’re just trying to add a little extra sheen. IMG_2932On the right side of each blue diamond, add a smaller, silver one. IMG_2934 Make the assumption that the pattern continues off the canvas and paint silver diamonds to the right of where the assumed blue diamonds are.  Does that make sense? IMG_2940Continue painting the silver diamonds off the edge of the canvas. IMG_2944Add small green diamonds (the same size as the silver ones) to the left of the large, blue diamonds. IMG_2946Add small, green diamonds on top of the large, blue ones.

The pearl and metallic paint aren’t as opaque as I’d like them to be, so I added a couple extra coats of green and silver paint.

Once, you’re satisfied with the opacity of the paint, the project is complete! IMG_3021I really love how this project turned out!

So pretty!

Julep Maven Review & Coupon – July 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Julep Maven review!

  • Rethink Your Shower – Hydrating Body Cleansing Oil
  • Your Cuticles Look Thirsty – Fast-Absorbing Cuticle Crème

  • Brittany – Classic with a Twist – Bleached Apricot Crème

IMG_3240It’s Fun To Exfoliate – All-Natural Body Konjac Sponge – Add On

When I saw that this month’s featured beauty product was the body cleansing oil, I new I needed to get the sponge that went along with it!

I’ve been using the sponge for several days now, and I’m loving it.  It’s a great size and isn’t too prickly and exfoliating.

I also love that it comes with it’s own suction hook that allows you to hang it in your shower! So convenient!

IMG_3237Rethink Your Shower – Hydrating Body Cleansing Oil

I’ve heard great things about the facial cleansing oil that Julep offers, so I was pretty excited to see the body version included in the July box.

I love the citrusy scent of the oil! It’s very refreshing!

I’ve only been using this body oil for a few days, so I haven’t noticed any drastic results.  My skin does feel a little smoother though, which is great!

IMG_3232Your Cuticles Look Thirsty – Fast-Absorbing Cuticle Crème – Add On

I chose to add on this product because my cuticle area does get dry sometimes, and I get little hangnails. So annoying!

So far I really like this crème!  It absorbs super quickly, which is super handy! I hate lotions and stuff that take forever and a day to soak in!

IMG_3230Alexa – Classic with a Twist – Hyacinth Crème

Alexa is a little more purpley/gray than I was expecting, but I really love it!  It’s painted on my toes right now and is rather pretty!

I think this polish will be better for fall though!  It’s not very bright and summery.

Brittany – Classic with a Twist – Bleached Apricot Crème

I love this peachy color!  I think it would be very pretty in the spring time.  Very Eastery!

I’m not sure it works with my fair skin, but I painted it on my fingernails anyway!

IMG_3243As usual, Julep rounded out the box with a coupon! Yay!

I’m really loving the July box!  I can’t wait to see more results from the cuticle crème and body oil!

How To – DIY Upcycled Glass Candle Jars

Hi everyone!

I have a fun, little upcycling project to share with you today! IMG_2817Supplies:

  • Cleaned out candle jars (or any clean glass jars)
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Glass Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Coordinating decorative trim
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Martha Stewart Crafts Glass Paint

  • Frost Translucent – Wedding Cake
  • Gloss Transparent – Pink Hyacinth

IMG_2826 We’re going to start by cleaning our jars with rubbing alcohol.

I didn’t have any rubbing alcohol, so I dug through my first aid kit and found this alcohol wipe to clean my jars with.

The rubbing alcohol is supposed to make the paint adhere better to the glass. IMG_2830I have two different size candle jars.

I’m going to paint the smaller one pink and the larger one white. IMG_2837Now, we’re going to start painting.

Like I said above, I’m going to paint this jar pink. IMG_2850 After two or three coats of paint, I still wasn’t satisfied with the color, so I added a bunch more! IMG_2857I believe this is after seven or eight coats of paint.

I’d never used glass paint before, so I wasn’t sure what the final product was supposed to look like.

I wasn’t exactly satisfied with my painting at this point, but I decided to stop and let the paint dry. IMG_2866While the pink paint was drying, I started on my white, beach glass jar.

I only gave the white jar two coats of paint.

The gloss and frost paints are quite different, so I didn’t feel like I needed to add as many coats to the white jar. IMG_2894I set my jars aside to dry and noticed the pink jar becoming more transparent and quite a bit prettier! YAY!

At this point, I decided to add some fun decorative trim to each jar.  I dug through all my craft supplies and came up with some great options! IMG_2974This hot pink, crochet trim will be added to the pink jar.

I got this pack of scraps from Hobby Lobby several years ago, and as you can tell, most of the pretty colors have been used up! IMG_2970I bought these adorable, little trim packs from the dollar section at Michael’s several years ago, and now I’m finally getting some use out of them!

All of these colors are great and would be perfect for my white jar.

I decided to go with the aqua/mint set because I thought it would complement my pink jar quite nicely! IMG_2981For the pink jar, we’re just going to hot glue a small piece of trim around the top edge.

I tried to be as precise as possible when lining up the ends of the trim. The picture makes the ends look all jumbled, but I promise they look pretty good in person! IMG_2977The white jar is a little more involved.

We’re going to start by adding a piece of the aqua, velvet ribbon around the top edge of the jar. IMG_2984Next, we’re going to make a bow.

Cut a short piece of velvet ribbon to make the bow.  I think my piece is 4 inches or so.

Cut an even smaller piece for the center of the bow.  I think mine is 1.5 inches long. IMG_2986Fold the longer of the two pieces in thirds and glue in the center. This will form the body of the bow. IMG_2989Now, we’re going to glue the center ribbon around the bow. IMG_2992Flip the bow over (the seam should be facing you) and glue one side of the smaller ribbon to the center of the bow. IMG_2993Now, wrap the ribbon completely around the bow and glue on the back right next to where you glued it in the previous step. IMG_2995Here’s the finished bow! So little and cute! IMG_2999Put a small dot of hot glue over the ribbon seam on the jar.

The bow should be glued right where to two edges of the ribbon meet, covering the seam completely. IMG_3005Once the bow is glued on, our upcycled jars are complete! IMG_3013I LOVE LOVE LOVE how these turned out!

My lip products look adorable in them!

The colors pop fantastically!

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Rise and Shine

Hi everyone!

I have a fun and colorful embroidery project to share today! IMG_2872Supplies:

  • Bright, floral fabric
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Pencil
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Printed phrase

DMC Floss Color:

  • 4040

I chose this floss specifically for the fun color variations! Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 3.04.54 PMThis is the phrase motif we’ll be using.

I picked two complementary fonts off my computer and typed out my desired phrase.

You’re more than welcome to use my font choices, or you can choose some fonts of your own! IMG_2896We’re going to start by tracing the phrase onto our fabric.

Once the phrase is traced, hoop your fabric. IMG_2898Start Back Stitching around “Rise.”

If you like the Satin Stitch, do that! I think it would look very pretty here! IMG_2901 IMG_2903 Continue Back Stitching until “Rise” is complete. IMG_2967I contemplated using the Stem/Outline Stitch for the “and,” but in the end, I decided to stick with the Back Stitch. IMG_3032 Just like we did with “Rise,” begin Back Stitching the word “Shine.”IMG_3035 IMG_3038IMG_3041Once “Shine” is complete, our project is done! IMG_3050I absolutely love how cheerful and bright this turned out!
