Hello, hello! Let’s kick things off today by quickly discussing whether you call it a koozie, a coozie, or a cozy? Because I just don’t know what to call this pattern. I call a can sleeve a koozie, but how do I spell it? With a K or with a C? I could go either way. I consulted Google, and it seems like the jury is out there too. So, let’s just move along with the crochet can koozie pattern and dive right in!

I had a bright idea before bed the other night. Why not make a few crochet koozies for the Fourth? My family gets together for a fun outdoor day on the water every Fourth of July, so I figured that crochet koozies would be a great addition to the festivities this year!
I knew I wanted to incorporate the herringbone half double crochet stitch (one of my current faves!) in this pattern and use up a bit of the cotton yarn I already had in my stash.
Koozie Details
To accommodate all types of beverages and different can styles, this crochet can koozie pattern is available in two sizes—standard and slim.
Project Supplies
- Cotton yarn, medium-weight (I’m using Lily Sugar n’ Cream and Loops & Threads Cotton)
- H/5.0 mm Crochet Hook (Clover crochet hooks are some of the best!)
- Stitch markers (These are my favorite)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors

Pattern Notes
- This pattern is written in U.S. terminology
- Stitch count is indicated in parentheses at the end of each row
- The chain at the start of each round does not count as a stitch
- Gauge: Measure the base of each koozie to determine if you need to go up or down a hook size
- Standard: After row 5, your circle should measure approximately 2.75″
- Slim: After row 4, your circle should measure approximately 2.25″

Crochet Can Koozie Pattern: Standard
Depending on the look you’re going for, you can alternate yarn colors for a striped pattern or stick with one yarn throughout (either solid or variegated). The pattern below is written with stripes in mind, but if you’d rather use all one yarn (like some of my example photos), then just skip the color change notes and keep going!
If you choose to make a striped koozie, I recommend weaving in your ends as you go! It’s so much easier than waiting to do them all at the end.
In color #1, make a magic ring.

Koozie Tips & Tricks
Your crochet koozie might be a little snug when you first put it on a can, but it will stretch a bit after the first use.
A pro-tip for any kind of koozie is to put in on your can BEFORE you pop the tab! Trying to put a koozie on after opening your can could cause a spill or two.

Crochet Can Koozie Pattern: Slim
I went with a solid color for the photos used in this pattern. If you want to make a striped koozie, apply the color switching instructions from the standard koozie pattern up above but follow the stitch counts down below.
