DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Folk Art Birdie

Hi everyone!

I have a quick and easy embroidery tutorial for you!

IMG_0974Supplies:

  • Stitched Blooms by Carina Envoldsen-Harris (get it here)
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric
  • Needle
  • Sharpie
  • Pencil

IMG_0980DMC Floss Colors:

  • 743 – yellow
  • 907 – green
  • 970 – orange
  • 3846 – blue
IMG_0987

Design courtesy of Stitched Blooms

This is the motif we’ll be using.

I opened this photo file in Photoshop and edited out the swirls.  I didn’t quite like them with the birdie.  I think they’d look much cuter on their own.

IMG_0983Print out the motif and trace it with your Sharpie.

Trace the motif onto your fabric.

IMG_0991We’re going to start with our orange thread, and Back Stitch the beak.

IMG_0993Back Stitch the wing in orange as well.

IMG_0997Use the blue thread to Back Stitch the eye.

IMG_1003Continue by stitching the tail feathers.

IMG_1006IMG_1008Once the tail feathers are done, we’re going to stitch the body.

IMG_1015Use the yellow thread for the birdie’s body.

IMG_1017Use the running stitch and the green thread to add some final touches.

IMG_1020Once the green stitching is done, our cute little birdie is complete!

IMG_1032I love the way this birdie turned out!

The colors are so bright and fun!

Happy Crafting!!

DIY Shabby Chic Hanging Chalkboard Tutorial

Hi everyone!

I’m sure some of you are getting tired of my embroidery tutorials, so I have something else to share with you today!

IMG_0478Supplies:

  • Wooden plaque (I got mine at Jo-Ann Fabrics)
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Paintbrush
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Staple gun
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scotch tape

IMG_0483Start by painting your plaque.

While the paint is drying, we’re going to move on to making the bow.

IMG_0484Without cutting your ribbon, make a loop.

Be sure to leave a long tail.  The tail will be used to connect the bow to the chalkboard.

IMG_0488Here’s a closeup of the first loop.

IMG_0492Now, add a second loop.

IMG_0496Add a third loop.

IMG_0500Add a fourth loop.

All of the loops should intersect, and the finished product should look like this.

IMG_0502With your needle and thread, stitch all the loops together.

I like to use two stitches and make a little x/+.

You can cut the ribbon now.  Just make sure you leave long tails.

IMG_0505Now take your thread and loop in between the top two loops.

IMG_0512Pull the thread taut to bunch up the ribbon and bring the top loops closer to the center of the bow.

IMG_0515Do the same for the bottom half of the bow.

IMG_0517Pull taut.

IMG_0521Wrap the thread around the bow and stitch through the center a couple of times before tying and cutting off the thread.

IMG_0524Set the bow portion aside.

Cut a 3 or 4 inch piece of ribbon from your spool.

IMG_0527Fold the ribbon in thirds and hot glue together.

I like to only glue a tiny bit of the end portions so that the ribbon doesn’t become stiff in the middle.

IMG_0529Turn your bow upside down (the back should be facing you) and glue one end of the little ribbon in the center.

Have the top side of the little ribbon facing you and glue the bottom side (the side with the seam) down.

IMG_0533Wrap the ribbon around the center of the bow.

IMG_0534Pull taut then glue down.

Once the glue has dried, you can cut the excess ribbon off.

IMG_0539Turn your bow over, and this is what it should look like!

So cute!

My ribbon was wired, so I was able to “fluff” the loops and arrange them how I wanted.

IMG_0541Back to the wooden plaque.

I’m a weirdo about chalkboard paint, so I gave my plaque at least seven coats of paint!

The bottle says you only need two, but I like to cover all my bases!

IMG_0551Once your plaque has dried, turn it over and place your bow upside down on top of the plaque.

IMG_0552Adjust your tails until you have them even and right where you want them.

Once they are in the correct place, use a little scotch tape to tack them down.

IMG_0557Use the staple gun to attach the ribbon to the plaque.

IMG_0559Once the staples are in place, you can cut the excess ribbon.

IMG_0563Turn your plaque over and it’s all ready to use!

IMG_0565I put mine on the back of my front door for reminders and little notes!

I didn’t want the chalkboard banging around when the door opened and closed, so I actually hung it with command strips and used little tiny hook to hold up the bow.

IMG_0567I couldn’t be happier with the way this turned out!

It perfectly matches my shabby chic apartment decor!

  • Stitched Blooms by Carina Envoldsen-Harris (get it here)
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric (I used gingham)
  • Needle
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Scissors

IMG_0790DMC Floss Colors:

  • 702 – green
  • 893 – dark pink
  • 894 – light pink
IMG_0796

Design courtesy of Stitched Blooms

This is the motif we’ll be using.

IMG_0792Print out the motif and trace with your Sharpie.

IMG_0799Trace the motif and hoop your fabric.

IMG_0801Use green thread and the Stem/Outline Stitch for the stem.

IMG_0803IMG_0806IMG_0811Continue on with the Stem Stitch until the stem is complete.

IMG_0814Keeping with the green thread, use the Back Stitch for the leaves.

IMG_0820IMG_0821Once the leaves are completed, we’ll start on the flowers.

IMG_0824Use the Back Stitch and the light pink thread for two of the flowers.

I chose two that are diagonal from each other, because I didn’t want two of the same color to be “touching.”

IMG_0829Stitch the two remaining flowers with the dark pink thread.

IMG_0958Our flowers are complete!

So bright and perfect for summer!

IMG_0710Box Contents:

  • Middle Kingdom – Mini Plum Vase – Coral Red

Sister of Los Angeles – Surf Sand Love Beach Towel – Retail Value $ 40

I apologize for how bad this picture is.  I was having trouble getting a decent picture of my towel.

I like how bright and summery this towel is!  It’s perfect for summer!

I will say that I’m not a surfer, so I would feel like a bit of a poser using this at the beach!

IMG_0701Middle Kingdom – Mini Plum Vase – Coral Red – Retail Value $20

I love this vase!  The size and shape make it super adorable!

Unfortunately, the coral red color doesn’t match my current decor. 🙁

IMG_0686Kitsch – Tri’d & True Y-Shaped Necklace – Retail Value $32

I love how dainty this necklace is!

The style is fun and like nothing I’ve owned before.  I’m not quite sure what tops I will wear this with, but I’ll hopefully decide on something soon!

IMG_0689Sage & Row – Bare Shave Cream – Retail Value $17

I was so excited when I saw this fancy shave cream in my box!  It smells really good, and I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

Unfortunately, the excitement stopped there.  I wasn’t satisfied with the way this cream lathers.  I know shave cream doesn’t actually lather, but I use EOS shaving cream all the time and for $4 it’s much thicker and does a better job than this $17 cream.

IMG_0695Batiste – Dry Shampoo – Cherry – Retail Value $4

Dry shampoos are very popular in subscription boxes.  I think these companies believe that we never wash our hair or something! 😉

The packaging of this product is adorable, and I can’t wait to give it a try!

IMG_0690Hammond’s Candies – McCraw’s Flat Taffy – Retail Value $1

I love the look of this taffy!  The bright colors make it so fun!

I haven’t had a chance to eat it yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be super yummy!

IMG_0680The total retail value for May is $114. That’s not too bad!

I’m pretty pleased with May, but I can’t wait to see what June has to offer!

What do you think of the May POPSUGAR Must Have box?

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Blueberry Bush

Hi everyone!

I got some new embroidery books the other day.  Here’s my first project from one of my new books!

IMG_0717Supplies:

  • Stitched Blooms by Carina Envoldsen-Harris (get it here)
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric (I used gingham)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Needle

IMG_0720DMC Floss Colors:

  • 699 – green
  • 796 – dark blue
  • 799 – light blue

IMG_0722

Design courtesy of Stitched Blooms

This is the blueberry motif we will be using.

IMG_0724Print out the motif and trace it with your Sharpie.

IMG_0730Trace the image onto your fabric and hoop your fabric.

IMG_0731We’re going to start with the green thread.

IMG_0738Use the Back Stitch for each portion of the stem.

IMG_0743IMG_0746IMG_0752The motif shows two lines of stitches for the base stem.  You can do two like the motif (and I) did or you can choose to do only one.

IMG_0755If you want to be daring, you can even fill in between the two portions of the base stem.

IMG_0760Now, we’re going to move onto the Lazy Daisies.

IMG_0764I have never stitched this many Lazy Daisies before.  It was actually pretty fun!

IMG_0767IMG_0770IMG_0772Once the Lazy Daisies are done, we’ll move on to the blueberries.

IMG_0777Start with the dark blue thread and Back Stitch two of the berries at the top.

IMG_0778Stitch two more berries with the dark blue thread.

IMG_0784Finish off the blueberry bush with some light blue berries.

IMG_0950Our blueberry bush is complete!

Don’t you love it?!  I sure do!!

Allure Sample Society – May 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Sample Society review!

IMG_0604Such a bold, red box!

IMG_0608Each box comes with a mini magazine containing details on each product featured in the box.

IMG_0611Box contents:

  • Laneige – Water Sleeping Mask
  • John Frieda – Luxurious Volume 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment
  • Eau Thermale Avène – Thermal Spring Water
  • Versace – Eros Pour Femme
  • Julep – Lip Gloss
  • Alterna Caviar Repair – Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray

IMG_0618Laneige – Water Sleeping Mask

As you’ve probably figured out by now, face masks scare me a little!  This one is no exception.  I’m less leery of masks that you wash off after 15 minutes.  This mask is supposed to be slept in!  Yikes!  One of these days, I’ll work up the nerve to give this sleeping mask a try!

On a positive note, this mask smells great!  It’s fresh and clean!

IMG_0638John Frieda – Luxurious Volume 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment

After reading the directions on the bottle, I believe this mask is designed for people who style their hair right after getting out of the shower.  I shower at night and sleep with my hair wet, so this hair treatment isn’t for me.

IMG_0627Eau Thermale Avène – Thermal Spring Water

This spring water spray is very interesting!  It’s literally water in an aerosol can.

My friend, Lindsey, has received this product before in another subscription box, and she says it’s quite refreshing.  After spraying it on my face a few minutes ago, I would have to agree with her!

IMG_0617Versace – Eros Pour Femme

I love how large this perfume sample is!  It’s so much bigger than the tiny samples I usually receive!

The only problems with this product are that I don’t wear perfume and I don’t like this scent.  It’s a little too old ladyish for me!

Oh well!  Maybe one of my friends will like it!

IMG_0633Julep – Lip Gloss – Graceful

I’ve been subscribing to Julep for over a year, so I’ve received this lip gloss before.

The formula is fantastic.  It’s very moisturizing!

Graceful wouldn’t be my first choice, but the color is still pretty.  It’s a very light pink.

IMG_0629Alterna Caviar Repair – Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray

I recently started straightening my hair everyday, so this product couldn’t have come at a better time.

It smells great and seems to work pretty well too!

IMG_0648I’m not overly excited about this month’s box, but that’s okay.

Beauty subscription boxes are very hit or miss with me!

What do you think of the May Sample Society box?!

If you’d like to make the teacup exactly match our teapot from earlier this week, you can use this motif instead.  IMG_0386Print out your motif and trace it with your Sharpie. IMG_0389Trace the teacup onto your fabric. IMG_0390Start with the light pink thread and Stem/Outline Stitch around the top of the cup. IMG_0393Continue down the sides of the cup. IMG_0396Finish up the cup by stitching the handle. IMG_0397Now, use the yellow thread to Back Stitch the lemon slice. IMG_0402Use the dark pink thread to Back Stitch the saucer.

Once the saucer is stitched, the project is complete! IMG_0411So cute! IMG_0580They look so good together!!

I love them!

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Floral Teapot

Hi everyone!

I have a pretty, shabby chic embroidery tutorial to share with you!

I actually made this, and another project I’ll be posting about later, for my Mom for Mother’s Day. IMG_0315Supplies:

  • Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
  • Embroidery hoop (6 inch)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie

IMG_0318DMC Floss Colors:

  • E415 – metallic silver
  • 819 – light pink
  • 3712 – medium pink
  • 3752 – light blue (optional)
  • 3815 – dark green
  • 3817 – light green

IMG_0328I chose metallic silver thread, because I wanted to bring out the silver in my fabric.

IMG_0319

Design courtesy of Doodle Stitching

This is the teapot motif we will be using. IMG_0324Print out the motif and trace it with your Sharpie. IMG_0326Trace the teapot onto your fabric. IMG_0332Use the light pink thread and Stem/Outline Stitch the body of the teapot. IMG_0334Now, stitch the lid, but leave a hole where the knob at the top of the pot will go. IMG_0337Continue on with the light pink thread and Stem Stitch. IMG_0343Finish up the spout and handle. IMG_0347Now, we’re going to Back Stitch the knob.

I’ve never used DMC metallic floss before, and it was SUPER hard to thread!  It took me forever! IMG_0351Continue with the silver, and Back Stitch the center of the flower. IMG_0352Use dark green thread and the Stem Stitch for stem. IMG_0356Use light green thread and the Back Stitch for the leaves. IMG_0360Finish up the leaves. IMG_0364Use the medium pink thread and Lazy Daisies for the flower petals.

These petals are the same width at the top and the bottom, so make sure you keep the petal open and not connected at the bottom. IMG_0368Once the petals are done, our teapot is complete! IMG_0371I absolutely LOVE the way this teapot turned out!

It’s so shabby chic!

You can never have too many pink nail polishes!  Amanda is perfect for summer and every other season too!  I can definitely see myself wearing this polish all the time!

Shelby – Classic with a Twist – Navy Ink Crème

This polish is very pretty! I think I’ll paint it on my toes soon!

Moni – Boho Glam – Coastal Blue Crème

Moni is so fun for summer!  I have it painted on my fingernails right now, and I love it!  It’s very bright and very cheerful!

IMG_0437Feels Like Velvet Full-Coverage Eye Shadow Duo – 5th Avenue & Broadway

I love eye shadow, so I was super excited when I found out that it was the featured beauty product this month!  I was so excited that I bought two!

5th Avenue & Broadway is perfect for everyday wear.  My favorite eye shadows are champagne colored, so this duo is perfect for me!

IMG_0444Feels Like Velvet Full-Coverage Eye Shadow Duo – Coconuts & Cabanas

Coconuts & Cabanas is much more pigmented than 5th Avenue & Broadway, so it’ll be better for nighttime wear.

I wasn’t expecting this shadow to be more pigmented than the other one, so I got it all over the place the first time I applied it!  Whoopsie daisy!

IMG_0447It’s Balm (Plush Pout) – Fuchsia Berry Crème

I loved the Plush Pout I received in my September box, so I decided to get another one this month.

IMG_0449I went with fuchsia berry this month, and I love it!  The color is fantastic and super long wearing!

IMG_0464Doublestep Foot Treatment & Friction Stick

Julep has a promotion that if you add on three or more items to your monthly box, you receive a free gift.  Since I added on three items this month, I got a gift!

I’m a religious user of Band-Aid Friction Block, so I know I’ll get lots of use out of this product.

I’ve been using it for it’s treatment benefits for the last few days, and so far, it’s working great!

IMG_0461Here’s the coupon code and quote for May.

As usual, the coupon is good for two uses and expires May 31st.

What did you think of the May collection?!
