Ipsy Review – April 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Ipsy review! IMG_9875Pretty in pink! IMG_9881I really like the makeup back this month!  It’s so colorful and fun! IMG_9883The theme for April is “Beautifully Bohemian.” IMG_9886Bag Contents:

  • MicaBeauty – Eye Primer
  • theBalm Cosmetics – NUDE Dude Eyeshadow Single
  • Mullein & Sparrow – Mini Lip & Cheek Tint
  • Gallany Cosmetics – Lipstick
  • JulieG – Nail Color

IMG_9898MicaBeauty – Eye Primer

I don’t like beauty products that require you to stick your fingers in a tub.  I know that’s kind of weird, but I don’t like digging my nails into products.

Also, products are usually difficult to get out of the tubs. This primer is no different.  I’m having a hard time getting enough product out of the tub to be able to apply it.  What I have managed to get out of the tub is very thick and hard to blend.IMG_9895theBalm Cosmetics – NUDE Dude Eyeshadow Single – Fit

I love the packaging of this eyeshadow!  It’s so unique and cute!

This eyeshadow has great pigmentation, and the bronze color is a good neutral! IMG_9902Mullein & Sparrow – Mini Lip & Cheek Tint

Another product in a tub. 🙁

This tint smells oddly of chocolate and fruit.  An interesting combination for a beauty product.

The tint is very sheer but much easier to get out of the tub than the eye primer above. IMG_9912Gallany Cosmetics – Lipstick – Petal

This lipstick has a very intense “makeup-y” smell. IMG_9908Petal is a great color for me!  It’s a very pretty, rosy pink. IMG_9905JulieG – Nail Color – Damsel

This nail polish is the perfect pink for summertime.

Since I subscribe to Julep, I told Ipsy (on my beauty quiz) that I didn’t want to receive nail polish from them.  So many people have had problems with the responses to their beauty quizzes that I figured I’d get nail polish all the time.  I’m pretty surprised that I was able to go almost a year without receiving any! IMG_9917

April was an okay month for Ipsy.  I like the bag and the eyeshadow.  The lipstick is okay, but because of the smell, I don’t think I’ll end up using it.

I’ve been pretty disappointed with Ipsy in the last few months, so I’ve decided to cancel my subscription.

I’ll continue to read other bloggers’ reviews, and if Ipsy improves, I will most likely subscribe again!

What do you think of the April bag?  Or Ipsy in general?

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Birdies on a Branch

Hi everyone!

My Big (Sister in my sorority) is graduating soon, so I made her a cute, little “going away” present.

  • Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery hoop (6 inch)
  • Fabric (I got mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie

IMG_9602DMC Floss Colors:

  • 703 – green
  • 840 – light brown
  • 958 – medium turquoise
  • 964 – light turquoise
  • 838 – dark brown

My dark brown thread has clearly seen better days!  It’s a jumbled mess right now!

Design courtesy of Doodle Stitching

This is the birdie motif we will be using.

IMG_9609Print out the design and trace over it with a Sharpie. I like to use the Ultra Fine Point ones.

IMG_9613Use your pencil to trace the design onto your fabric.

IMG_9615We’re going to start by using the green thread and Back Stitching the leaves.

IMG_9618You can use whatever stitch you like, but I think the Back Stitch looks quite nice!

IMG_9622We’re going to start stitching the birds with our light turquoise thread.

I chose to use the Stem/Outline Stitch for this portion of the project.

IMG_9625I like to try and stitch all the portions that are the same color at one time and then move on to the next color.

IMG_9628Now, on to the medium turquoise.

IMG_9631The Stem/Outline Stitch is so pretty!

IMG_9634I love the little swirls!  They make these birdies so much cuter!

IMG_9642Finish up the bird bodies and move on to the beaks.

I used the Satin Stitch for both beaks.

I don’t love the way the little bird’s beak turned out.  I’ll get over it though!

IMG_9645Using the light brown thread, Back Stitch the branch.

IMG_9649Using the dark brown thread and the Back Stitch, create the nest.

IMG_9652Stitching the nest was the hardest part.

My pencil lines were all jumbled and hard to see.  I ended up just placing the lines wherever!

IMG_9655Continuing with the dark brown thread, use a French Knot for each eye.

IMG_9679And there you have it!

Our cute, little birdies are complete!!

Happy Crafting!

POPSUGAR Must Have Review – April 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly POPSUGAR Must Have review!

IMG_9791To receive POPSUGAR Must Have each month like I do, click here!

IMG_9739I’m so proud of myself! This month I refrained from looking at any spoilers before my box arrived!

The mystery was so much fun!

IMG_9751Each box comes with a little card detailing each item featured in the box.

IMG_9754Box Contents:

  • Dabney Lee – Dottie Umbrella
  • One Love Organics – Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum
  • Produce Candles – Rhubarb Spring Candle
  • Flip & Tumble – 24-7 Bag
  • Potting Shed Creations – Garden-in-a-Bag Basil
  • Mott 50 – $25 Gift Card

IMG_9781Dabney Lee – Dottie Umbrella – Retail Value $20

I absolutely love this umbrella! The patten is adorable!

The polka dots are so much fun, and navy and pink are my favorite colors!

IMG_9787This umbrella is really well made!

I’ve used it once already, and since I live in Florida, I’m sure I’ll be using it again really soon!

IMG_9828One Love Organics – Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum – Retail Value $39

I was expecting this serum to be a gel instead of the thin oil that it is.

It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I really do like it!  I’ve used it twice now, and it’s great!

So far, I like it best when applied right after shaving my legs!  My legs are so smooth afterwards!  So awesome!

It smells good too!

IMG_9814Produce Candles – Rhubarb Spring Candle – Retail Value $20

I LOVE this candle!  The packaging is adorable, and it smells fantastic!

IMG_9818The back of the candle has lots of good facts about rhubarb.  Very interesting!

I also got a coupon code for 35% off! What a deal!!

IMG_9773Flip & Tumble – 24-7 Bag – Retail Value $12

I love reusable bags.  I prefer mine to be structured though.

IMG_9801The bag is a decent size.  It’s also nifty that it fits in that tiny, little stretchy pouch.

IMG_9802I like the padded strap!  Such a great feature!

I also got a coupon for 20% off!  I don’t think I’ll use it, but it’s nice to have!

IMG_9821Potting Shed Creations – Garden-in-a-Bag Basil – Retail Value $10

I love this! It’s so cute and fun!

On the back of the bag, there’s lots of information about basil and how to grow this Garden-in-a-Bag.

When I get enough room on my counter top, I’m going to start growing basil!

IMG_9767Special Extra – Mott 50 – $25 Gift Card

I’ve been looking on the Mott 50 website to see if there is anything I’d like to buy.  I found some cute cardigans, but they’re kind of expensive even with the gift card.  I’ll have to see if my mom or any of my friends want to use it!

IMG_9744I really love the April box!  It’s so springy and fun!

Not including the gift card (that I probably won’t use) the total retail value is $101.

That’s the lowest retail value I’ve seen since subscribing in January, but I’m okay with it.  Most of this month’s products are awesome!

Now, I can’t wait for the May box to come out!

What do you think of the April POPSUGAR Must Have box?!

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Betsy the Butterfly

Hi everyone!

I have a fun, springy embroidery project for you! IMG_9400Supplies:

  • Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
  • Embroidery hoop (4 inch)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Sharpie
  • Pencil

IMG_9399DMC Floss Colors:

  • 743 – dark yellow
  • 744 – light yellow
  • 958 – dark aqua
  • 964 – light aqua
Design courtesy of Doodle Stitching

This is the butterfly motif we will be using. IMG_9408We’re going to start by printing out the motif and tracing it with a Sharpie. IMG_9409Use your pencil to trace Betsy onto your fabric.

IMG_9416 Begin with the light yellow thread.

This project is made (almost) entirely with the Split Stitch.

This was my first time using the Split Stitch, and I’m not so sure about it. IMG_9418Continue with the light yellow and finish stitching the antennae. IMG_9424Continue with the light yellow thread.

Part of why I don’t like this stitch is that it’s not clean.  The threads were going everywhere and I wasn’t pleased. IMG_9428Use the light aqua thread to stitch Betsy’s head and body. IMG_9435Continue with the light aqua thread. IMG_9438Now, were going to move on to the dark aqua thread. IMG_9440Do you see what I mean about the stitch not being clean? The loose threads drive me crazy! IMG_9442I apologize for the blurry picture.  My camera wouldn’t focus.

We’re going to Satin Stitch the dots on each wing.  Before we do that though, we’re going to outline the dot first. IMG_9446Now, Satin Stitch over the outline. IMG_9448Do the same for the other dot. IMG_9450Now, use the dark yellow for the larger wing section. IMG_9454Continue on with the dark yellow thread and finish up the wings. IMG_9461Betsy the Butterfly is complete!

I love this motif but not the Split Stitch!  I won’t be using it again for quite some time!

What do you think about the Split Stitch?

Allure Sample Society Review – April 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Sample Society review!

IMG_9698A bright, red box to brighten my day!

IMG_9700This mini-mag is the first thing I see when I open my box.

It has details on each product and an explanation of why the Beauty Directors picked them to be featured in the box.

IMG_9703Box Contents:

  • Mt. Sapola –  Lavender-Chamomile Body Lotion
  • Jane Iredale – Just Kissed Lip Plumper – Rio
  • Benefit Cosmetics – The POREfessional
  • Bumble and Bumble – Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil
  • Marc Jacobs – Daisy Dream
  • Illume – Tonka Noir Candle

IMG_9721Mt. Sapola –  Lavender-Chamomile Body Lotion

I just applied this lotion, and I don’t think it’s for me.  The scent is VERY strong!

The curators are aware of the strong scent though!  I read the mini-mag and laughed when the writer very bluntly said that this product is not for everyone!  I’ll see if any of my friends like it!

Apart from the scent, I really like this lotion.  It is very quick to absorb and doesn’t leave a residue.

IMG_9715Jane Iredale – Just Kissed Lip Plumper – Rio

This is the smallest lipstick sample I have ever received!  The canister is super small but also super cute!

Even though the cannister small, there is a lot of product inside.

When applied, there is a little bit of a tingle but not too much!

Rio is a light brown shade and isn’t quite for me.  I prefer rosier colored lipsticks.

IMG_9713Benefit Cosmetics – The POREfessional

I use POREfessional everyday, so I am very pleased to receive this in my box!

I’m quite surprised with how many Benefit products I’ve received in subscription boxes recently!  I got some in my last Sample Society box and in my last POPSUGAR Must Have.  No complaints from me though!

IMG_9726Bumble and Bumble – Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

I have thin hair so I’m a little worried about adding oil to my hair.  After reading the mini-mag though, I have decided to give this oil a try!

The mini-mag says this oil is good for all hair types.  It also says that it smooths flyaways.  I have quite a bit of those, so I will definitely be giving this a try in the near future!

IMG_9729Marc Jacobs – Daisy Dream

I’ve gotten a sample of this perfume somewhere else before.  I can’t seem to remember where though.  Perhaps it was a Sephora freebie? Or maybe Ulta?

I like the smell of Daisy Dream when it’s sprayed into the air, but I don’t think I’d like it if it was sprayed on me.

I’ve never worn perfume before, and I would be quite overwhelmed if I started.

Illume – Tonka Noir Candle

I absolutely LOVE this candle!  It smells great and the packaging is adorable!

I can’t find a specific scent anywhere on the package but the Allure mini-mag says their are notes of mandarin, plum, rose, jasmine, tonka bean, musk, sandalwood, and Madagascar vanilla.  That’s a lot of notes!  All I can say is that it’s a calming and soothing scent!

I definitely wouldn’t mind a full-size of one of these candles!

IMG_9710My second month of Allure Sample Society was great!

I can’t wait to see what month three has in store for me!

Do you subscribe to Sample Society?!  What do you think of the April box?

Julep Maven Review & Coupon – April 2015

Hi everyone!

It’s time for my monthly Maven review!

IMG_9548If you’d like to receive pretty, purple boxes each month like I do, click here!

I was surprised to see that my April box was much smaller than usual.  I received a small box like this one only once before when I bought a small, mystery box.  Maybe Julep is trying to cut back on wasted cardboard?  Who knows!

IMG_9553Box Contents:

  • Randi – It Girl – Pink Plumeria Crème
  • Danielle – It Girl – Cerulean Wave Duochrome
  • Oxygen Bonding Base Coat
  • Light On Your Lips – Chit Chat – Sunset Rose Créme
  • Gobstoppers (Yum!)
  • Coupon

I got a little wild this month and deviated from my usual style, Classic with a Twist!

IMG_9560April features “The Paradise Collection.”  There were so many bright, fun colors to choose from this month!

IMG_9564Randi – It Girl – Pink Plumeria Crème

I absolutely love Randi!  I have it painted on my fingers AND toes right now!

It’s the perfect pink color for spring!

It seems like all the pink nail polishes I own are orangey pink.  I love that this one is more of a true pink!

Danielle – It Girl – Cerulean Wave Duochrome

I haven’t tried Danielle out yet.

It might be too bold of a color for everyday where!

I think it would be perfect for an accent nail or polka dots though!

IMG_9582Oxygen Bonding Base Coat

I don’t typically use base coats, but I tried this one out when I painted my fingernails with Randi.  It dried really quickly and so far, it’s working really well!

IMG_9567Light On Your Lips – Chit Chat – Sunset Rose Crème – ADD ON

As I mentioned last month, I love the Light On Your Lips lipstick, and I wanted to try another color.

I was super excited to see that the new lipsticks were offered as add ons this month, and I just couldn’t resist picking up another!

IMG_9570 This time, I went with Chit Chat, and I couldn’t be happier!

I absolutely love the color!  It’s perfect for everyday where!

IMG_9556Here is this month’s quote and coupon!

Free polish! So fun!

What do you think of your April Maven box?!

DIY Hand Embroidery Motif – Fairy Cottage

Hi everyone!

As promised, here is another embroidery project featuring the Stem/Outline Stitch!

  • Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery hoop (7 inch)
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Needle

IMG_9256DMC Floss Colors:

  • 704 – green
  • 747 – light blue
  • 996 – blue
  • 3705 – dark coraly pink
  • 3706 – medium coraly pink
  • 3770 – very light peach
Design courtesy of Doodle Stitching

This is the cottage motif we will be using!

Feel free to switch up your thread colors!  I did (a little bit!)

IMG_9262Start by printing out the design and tracing over it with a Sharpie.  I like to use the Ultra Fine Point.

IMG_9263Use a pencil to trace the design onto your fabric.

I went with a white fabric with a (kind of) subtle abstract, floral pattern on it.  Throughout the project, I had a love/hate relationship with my fabric.  This fabric has a thicker weave than I’m used to and can be a little distracting.  I got over it though and am satisfied with the final product! (Which you will see in a few minutes!)

IMG_9268Start with the blue floss and Back Stitch the walls of the cottage.

IMG_9270Here comes the Stem/Outline Stitch!

My thread pulled a little on the right swirly.  I had to go back and tuck it back in.

IMG_9273I chose to stitch the stems over the blue, because in reality, the flowers would be on the outside of the house.

IMG_9276Continue on across the side of the house.

IMG_9280Use the darker, coral thread to Back Stitch the heart.

IMG_9281Now, comes the hardest part!

Use the Stem/Outline Stitch for the scalloped rooftop.

IMG_9290This rooftop took the longest amount of time!

IMG_9297I can’t tell you how many times I stabbed my left thumb with my needle while stitching this! 🙁

Because my fabric was so thick, I had to push with my right hand (which ended up bruising) and pull with my left.

IMG_9298After one too many stabs to the thumb, I took a break from the rooftop and stitched the curtains.

I used the medium coral for this part.

IMG_9303Use the light blue thread and the Back Stitch for the window.

IMG_9308Continuing with the Back Stitch, use the light peach thread for the door.

IMG_9310We’re going to Satin Stitch the doorknob, but before doing that, we’re going to Back Stitch the outline.

My Granny told my Mom (who told me) that this is the easiest way to do the Satin Stitch.

IMG_9313Now, Satin Stitch over the doorknob outline.

IMG_9315Moving onto the window frame.

Continue with the Back Stitch.

IMG_9318I tried my best to center the vertical stitches as much as possible.

IMG_9321Now, finish up the outer window frame.

IMG_9323Using the medium coral, Back Stitch every other “flower.”

IMG_9330I apologize for randomly skipping around.  I don’t know what I was doing!

Again with the light peach and the Back Stitch, create the chimney.

IMG_9335Now, we’re going back to the rooftop!IMG_9337The hardest part of stitching the rooftop was lining up the first and last stitch to make it look seamless.  I stitched it five times before I was satisfied!  Can you tell?!

IMG_9340Back to the flowers!

Finish up the medium coral flower on the right of the door, and then stitch the remaining three with the darker coral thread.

IMG_9345Once the flowers are complete, you are done!

IMG_9349So cute! I absolutely LOVE the way this turned out!

There are quite a few fairy motifs in the Doodle Stitching book.  I’ll probably do another one soon!

Happy Crafting!!

DIY Hand Embroidery – Olivia the Octopus

Hi everyone!

I have a quick and easy embroidery tutorial to share with you!

I’ve been talking about practicing the Stem/Outline stitch for a while now, and I’m finally getting around to doing it.

This project is made (almost) entirely with the Stem Stitch. IMG_9354Supplies:

  • Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery hoop (4 inch)
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Fabric

IMG_9358DMC Floss Colors:

  • 552 – dark purple
  • 553 – medium purple
Design courtesy of Doodle Stitching

This is the cute, little octopus we’ll be stitching! IMG_9362First, print out the motif and trace with your Sharpie.

Then, trace with a pencil onto your fabric. IMG_9365 Apart from her eyes, Olivia is made entirely of the Stem/Outline Stitch.

I used the medium purple floss for the body. IMG_9368I started at the top and went around counter clock-wise. IMG_9370My fabric was very thin, so my stitches are a little looser than I would like.

In the next few days, I’ll be uploading another project featuring the Stem/Outline Stitch where the stitches are much tighter. IMG_9373Olivia was so fast to stitch!

I believe it took me less than half and hour! IMG_9377I used the darker purple floss for her eyes.

You can either use the Satin Stitch or French Knots for the eyes.  Whatever you prefer! IMG_9380Olivia the octopus is complete!

What a cutie!
