I love giving gifts, but I’m not so great at giving cards with them. I’m more focused on the gift itself (gifts are my love language after all) than I am on the card, so if you do happen to get one from me, consider yourself lucky! All that is soon to change though with this super easy DIY washi tape birthday card. With a few supplies and a few minutes, you can make the cutest candle card to accompany any celebratory gift!
Supplies
- Blank cards and envelopes
- Washi tape (This set is super cute and so is this one!)
- Micron Pen
- Crayola Super Tips
- Scissors
Washi Tape Birthday Card
Take one greeting card and set it down open side toward you.
Next, take one piece of washi and place it in the middle of your card about halfway up.
Once you have your tape where you want it, trim as close to the card as you can without cutting into the card. If you do accidentally cut into the card, that’s okay! I definitely did once or twice!
Continue placing and trimming tape until you reach the edge of the card.
I added my patterned tapes in random order, but you could do an alternating pattern or something like that if you’d like! That would be super cute!
When you reach the edge, you may notice that your last piece of tape extends beyond the side of the card.
If that’s the case, trim the bottom as usual and also trim the tape on the side.
Now that you have one side done, start adding tape “candles” in the other direction. As you’re adding tape, make sure to vary the height of each strip.
There’s no rhyme or reason to how I varied my tape height. I just kept shifting up and down.
When you get to the other edge, trim the excess tape off the bottom and the side just like before.
When you’re all done adding tape, your card should look something like this.
Take the yellow marker and begin adding teardrops (flames) above each candle. Leave a little bit of space between the bottom of each teardrop and the top of each candle.
Your card should look something like this when you finish with the teardrops.
Begin adding wicks to connect each candle with its flame.
Start a little below the center of each teardrop and draw a straight line down to the top of each candle. Be careful not to touch your black pen to the washi tape.
Work your way across the card until each candle has a wick.
Ta-da! Look how cute your candles are!
Now, you’re all set to add a message to your washi tape birthday card and give it to a friend!
