Watercolor Wednesday – The Adventure Begins

Hi everyone!

I’ve been looking for a new craft for a while now and have decided to try out watercolor!

Since I usually post on Wednesdays and watercolor starts with a “W,” I have dubbed this little adventure “Watercolor Wednesday.” I won’t be posting a watercolor article every Wednesday (because I’ll probably forget), but I will be posting several each month!

Get excited! IMG_3920Jo-Ann’s had a ton of 50% off coupons floating around last week, so I decided to go ahead and pick up some watercolor supplies!

They had a big, pretty pack of 24 watercolors that I really wanted to buy, but I was sensible and chose to buy the small (way less exciting) 12 pack.Β  If I get really good at watercolors, you better believe I will go back and buy the big pack of paints!

I also bought a paint palette (all my other ones are gross and not good for pictures), some paint brushes (I have lots of paint brushes, but I use them all for acrylics), and some watercolor paper. (I really needed this. I don’t have any other watercolor paper lying around!) IMG_3965I began testing my skills with some doodles and brush lettering.

If you follow me on Instagram (which you definitely should), you would know that I took up brush lettering earlier in the summer.Β  Conveniently enough, those skills transferred over, and I feel somewhat confident in my ability to letter with an actual paint brush! Yay! IMG_3966I really love how my little lemon turned out! Too cute!!

After painting such an adorable lemon, I got confident in my skills and decided to paint a phrase. IMG_3968Now this right here is what happens when you aren’t paying attention to your work!Β  Such a sad, sad typo!

I was paying more attention to Gilmore Girls than I was my words and ended up making a fatal mistake! πŸ™

I actually caught the mistake as soon as I finished the “e” in “dream” but decided to just go ahead and finish it anyway. Next time I’ll pause my Netflix when I’m working on something semi-tedious!

Lesson learned!

I hope you enjoyed this little intro to Watercolor Wednesday!

I’ll be back next week with (hopefully) no typos! Bow signature pink

Basic Embroidery Stitches

Hi everyone!

I got bored the other night and decided that I wanted to try hand embroidery!

IMG_6986I went to my local Joann Fabrics and bought some embroidery essentials!

I looked through several of the instruction books they had and went with 500 Simply Charming Designs for Embroidery.

I chose Simply Charming because the stitching instructions included good illustrations and were easy to understand!

IMG_6989There are a lot of really pretty blue threads in the DMC Home Decor pack, so I used one of them for my stitching practice!

IMG_6992Backstitch

I tried the Backstitch first!Β  I’ve used this stitch before, so I didn’t have much trouble with it!

IMG_6994Outline stitch

I think I did pretty well when I tried this stitch initially, but when I tried to make a decorative “N” I had some serious issues!

I did well when I was making a straight line, but the second I tried to make a curved line things got weird! πŸ™Β  I will try again though!

IMG_6995Straight stitch

For some reason, my straight stitch isn’t very straight, and the stitches got progressively shorter!

IMG_6998Chain stitch

I think my chain stitch looks pretty good, except my little chains aren’t as wide and open as the ones in the book.Β  That could be fixed with practice though!

IMG_7002French Knots stitch

As you can see, I had some serious trouble with the French Knots.

I only got one to work in my nine attempts!Β  That’s just sad!

IMG_7004Lazy Daisy Stitch

Once again, my loops aren’t as nice as the book’s, but that’s okay!Β  Practice makes perfect!

IMG_7005Blanket stitch

This one wasn’t too bad!Β  I do need to work on my consistency though!Β  My stitch length tends to fluctuate!

IMG_7007Fly stitch

I had some trouble getting both arms of the “V” the same length.Β  I also had trouble with the angles.Β  I think my first ones looks pretty good though!

Feather stitch

This stitch got easier as I went along.Β  It took me several tries to figure out the positioning and the angles.

IMG_7011Cross stitch

Once again, I had trouble with consistency!Β  I think the individual X’s look good though!

All in all, I think my first foray into hand embroidery went well!Β  With just a little bit of practice, I’ll soon be making big, fancy things!
