On My Bookshelf: Inspirational Craft Books

Inspiring Craft Books - Pink Bows & Twinkle Toes

Along with crafting, reading is one of my other hobbies! With these inspirational craft books, I’m able to combine both passions into one and find some new crafting styles and project ideas along the way! What a win-win!

Inspirational Craft Books

Art Starts with a Line by Erin McManness

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I’ve been exploring line drawing over the last few weeks. I have this book to thank for the instruction and inspiration!

Drawing is not something I’ve ever excelled at. I was actually enrolled in a drawing class in high school and had myself removed because I didn’t have any skill and didn’t think I would do very well. I probably shouldn’t have switched, but I think I switched into ceramics instead, which I greatly enjoyed. It all worked out in the end.

Anyway, this book gives details on tools and techniques along with simple instructions on how to draw florals, architecture, and more. It also shared tips and tricks on how to draw anything else you want, which I love! It’s a quick read and very useful if you’re interested in dipping your toe into the world of line drawing.

Craft a Life You Love by Amy Tangerine

I love Amy Tangerine! I’ve been following her on social media for years and couldn’t resist picking up her book.

Craft a Life You Love has the best title ever and is a mix of inspirational readings along with reflective activities. I haven’t completed every single activity in the sections I’ve read, but I will be going back to them when I have time because I really do think this book has so much to offer. I’ve also enjoyed doodling and lettering favorite quotes and such into the margins of this book. When I’m done, I imagine my copy will be full of notes and such!

The Sketchbook Idea Generator by Jennifer Orkin Lewis

I got this book in the mail only a few days ago and am SO excited about it! I follow the author, Jennifer, on Instagram, and raced over to Amazon to buy this book as soon as I saw her post about it.

What is so unique about this book is that it is split horizontally into three different sections: subject, medium/technique, and colors. The author suggests that you flip through the three categories until you find a combination that excites you. For example: a famous bridge (subject), gouache using a large brush (medium/technique), and soft yellow & iris (colors).

I’ve actually never used gouache paint before but have been intrigued for some time. So I purchased a set after ordering this book. The author does state that you do not need to buy any supplies and that you can use what you have on hand. I just like a good excuse to buy new supplies!

One thing I would like to do with this book is a 30-day challenge of some sort. Ideally, I would set aside time every day for 30 days (or maybe 10 would be more manageable) and create something from the sketchbook idea generator. Artists that participate in challenges always say how helpful challenges are when you’re trying to get out of a rut or discover something new about your artistic style. Sounds like a great use of time to me! When I do embark on my own challenge, I will be sure to share the details on Instagram!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this mini round up of inspirational craft books! Have you read/used any of the above? Do you have any favorites on your bookshelf that you think I should check out? If so, leave a comment down below and let me know!
