My First Sewing Project – Roll Up Brush Organizer

Hi everyone!

I apologize for my absence over the last two weeks!  I’ve been ridiculously busy!  After this week things should slow down again!

I went home this past weekend and spent Saturday with my Mom learning how to sew on a machine.

As you know, I’ve been crafting all my life but machine sewing is not something I’ve ever really tried!  My mom and I figured that now was as good a time as any for me to learn!

My mom found a pattern on Pinterest that she thought I’d like, and we got started!

I picked two complementary fabrics out at Jo-Ann’s.  The yellow looking one is actually a very pretty light cream with gold flecks!

IMG_5972We laid out the cutting board and all of our supplies on the dining room table.

IMG_5978I sewed the lining and outer fabric together with the tying ribbon and then folded part of it up to create a pocket for my brushes.

IMG_5985A little action shot for you!

Sewing the large pocket was pretty easy!  I had a ton of trouble when it came time to sew the individual brush pockets though!  The sewing machine wasn’t being very nice to me and kept jumbling up my thread at the beginning or end of almost every stitch!  The seam ripper and I became great friends during this portion of the project!

The sewing machine and I eventually got it figured out, and I was able to finish all the individual pockets several hours later!

IMG_6026I created several different sized pockets to accommodate the various sizes of my makeup brushes.

IMG_6032The pockets also fit my Tombow markers!

IMG_6022All rolled up with a pretty mint bow!  So cute!

I got quite frustrated during certain portions of this project, but I absolutely love how it turned out!

The colors and pattern are PERFECT!

Do you enjoy sewing?!

What was your first project?

Happy Crafting!!

Basic Embroidery Stitches

Hi everyone!

I got bored the other night and decided that I wanted to try hand embroidery!

IMG_6986I went to my local Joann Fabrics and bought some embroidery essentials!

I looked through several of the instruction books they had and went with 500 Simply Charming Designs for Embroidery.

I chose Simply Charming because the stitching instructions included good illustrations and were easy to understand!

IMG_6989There are a lot of really pretty blue threads in the DMC Home Decor pack, so I used one of them for my stitching practice!

IMG_6992Backstitch

I tried the Backstitch first!  I’ve used this stitch before, so I didn’t have much trouble with it!

IMG_6994Outline stitch

I think I did pretty well when I tried this stitch initially, but when I tried to make a decorative “N” I had some serious issues!

I did well when I was making a straight line, but the second I tried to make a curved line things got weird! 🙁  I will try again though!

IMG_6995Straight stitch

For some reason, my straight stitch isn’t very straight, and the stitches got progressively shorter!

IMG_6998Chain stitch

I think my chain stitch looks pretty good, except my little chains aren’t as wide and open as the ones in the book.  That could be fixed with practice though!

IMG_7002French Knots stitch

As you can see, I had some serious trouble with the French Knots.

I only got one to work in my nine attempts!  That’s just sad!

IMG_7004Lazy Daisy Stitch

Once again, my loops aren’t as nice as the book’s, but that’s okay!  Practice makes perfect!

IMG_7005Blanket stitch

This one wasn’t too bad!  I do need to work on my consistency though!  My stitch length tends to fluctuate!

IMG_7007Fly stitch

I had some trouble getting both arms of the “V” the same length.  I also had trouble with the angles.  I think my first ones looks pretty good though!

Feather stitch

This stitch got easier as I went along.  It took me several tries to figure out the positioning and the angles.

IMG_7011Cross stitch

Once again, I had trouble with consistency!  I think the individual X’s look good though!

All in all, I think my first foray into hand embroidery went well!  With just a little bit of practice, I’ll soon be making big, fancy things!

Fabric Fun!

Hi everyone!!

I LOVE crafting, so naturally, I LOVE buying craft supplies!!  I have a project coming up that will involve fabric, so today I went to my favorite fabric store, The Sewing Studio, to get some supplies.

My trip was pretty short today, because I was with one of my friends.  When I go alone, I can spend over an hour wandering around!

These are the fabrics I ended up purchasing!  I didn’t notice it at first but it seems like I had a color palette in mind!

I’m in LOVE with the silver and white material on the far left.  I will most likely end up using this fabric for my project!  It has a tiny bit of sheen to it, which I think will really make my project POP!

You might be wondering what my secret project entails, but I just can’t tell you yet!! It’s a gift for a friend of mine, and I don’t want to spoil the surprise!  I will be sure to post the project tutorial after she’s received her gift though!
