Hello, Hello! The summer is cruising right along and so am I with many, many projects! One of which I am so excited to share with you today — two different rainbow crochet hair scrunchie patterns! Ahh!! These scrunchies are SO HAPPY and FUN! I just can’t get enough of them. I’ve had a permanent smile on my face since I finished the very first one!
What’s better than a handmade scrunchie on a hot summer day? Not much, in my opinion! And a scrunchie that doubles as a fashion statement? Don’t mind if I do!
And you know what? They would make fantastic gifts! Perfect for birthdays or “just because” gifts! Also great as stocking stuffers, in easter baskets, or as valentines.
Scrunchie Details
I have two crochet hair scrunchie patterns to share with you today! One is created in the round and the other is crocheted flat and seamed together. Both are super easy to make and provide completely different looks!
Let’s dive in, shall we?
Project Supplies
- Fingering/Sock Weight Cotton (or cotton blend) Yarn (I’m using Hobbii Friends Cotton Linen yarn)
- E/3.5mm Crochet Hook (Clover crochet hooks are some of the best!)
- Stitch markers (These are my favorite)
- Elastic (I’m using 1/4″ knit elastic)
- Bodkin (or a safety pin)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Pattern Notes
- This pattern is written in U.S. terminology
- Stitch count is indicated in parentheses at the end of each row
- Gauge: Adjust your starting chain as needed to reach the below dimensions
- Scrunchie (in the round): Final crocheted tube is approximately 17.5″ by 1.5″
- To make a fluffier, fuller scrunchie, add additional rounds of hhdc. Instead of five rows of each color, you could try six or seven.
- You can also cut a shorter or longer piece of elastic to better fit your wrist
- Scrunchie (flat): Final crocheted rectangle is approximately 17.25″ by 2.75″
- To make a fluffier, fuller scrunchie, increase your starting chain number. Perhaps start with 101 chains instead of the 91 that I started with.
- You can also cut a shorter or longer piece of elastic to better fit your wrist.
- Scrunchie (in the round): Final crocheted tube is approximately 17.5″ by 1.5″

Scrunchie Assembly
Lay your crochet rectangle flat and measure. It should be approximately 17.25″ by 2.75″.
Fold in half and use the tail to whipstitch along the edge to create a tube.
Cut an 8″ piece of elastic. Use a bodkin or safety pin to thread the elastic through your crocheted tube
Line up both ends of elastic and tie a knot. Pull extra tight to make sure the knot is secure.
Tuck the knot into your scrunchie tube. Take what’s leftover of your tail or attach a new piece of yarn to sew your scrunchie closed.
To sew closed, line up both open ends of your crochet tube and whipstitch together.
Once sewn, weave in your ends!
Your crochet hair scrunchie is now complete! Isn’t it cute?! I sure think so!
