DIY Hand Embroidery – Olivia the Octopus

Hi everyone!

I have a quick and easy embroidery tutorial to share with you!

I’ve been talking about practicing the Stem/Outline stitch for a while now, and I’m finally getting around to doing it.

This project is made (almost) entirely with the Stem Stitch. Supplies:

• Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray (get it here)
• Embroidery floss
• Embroidery hoop (4 inch)
• Needle
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Sharpie
• Fabric

DMC Floss Colors:

• 552 – dark purple
• 553 – medium purple

This is the cute, little octopus we’ll be stitching! First, print out the motif and trace with your Sharpie.

Then, trace with a pencil onto your fabric. Apart from her eyes, Olivia is made entirely of the Stem/Outline Stitch.

I used the medium purple floss for the body. I started at the top and went around counter clock-wise. My fabric was very thin, so my stitches are a little looser than I would like.

In the next few days, I’ll be uploading another project featuring the Stem/Outline Stitch where the stitches are much tighter. Olivia was so fast to stitch!

I believe it took me less than half and hour! I used the darker purple floss for her eyes.

You can either use the Satin Stitch or French Knots for the eyes.  Whatever you prefer! Olivia the octopus is complete!
